As any harassed Hollywood director can testify, making a sequel to a blockbuster isn't easy.
While the Air Max Light was a superb interim follow-up to 1987's Air Max 1, the Nike Air Max 90 was the main event. With designer Tinker Hatfield back at the sketch pad, this chapter's muse was speed. A shoe that connected with so many youth movements in its 25 year lifespan was rooted in movement. The Air Max 90 was meant to look like it was in motion, even when it was static.
Then there was the Visible Air unit itself. Bigger than the Air Max 1’s unit by around five-percent, it represented the first in a continual quest to amplify the cushioning benefits and improve the ride.
People often bicker over which incarnation of Air Max is better, but everyone respects the legacy that this one left. Superseded by the Air Max BW the following year, the Air Max 90 is the release that passed the baton for that bestseller to dominate at street level.
